Marty Mauser is a man with no lack of confidence and the belief that he’ll achieve his dreams of winning the table tennis world championship. He’ll stop at nothing (and I do mean nothing) to make his way to the top. Inspired by the real-life table tennis player and hustler, Marty Reisman. Timothée Chalamet plays Reisman, Tyler the Creator/Tyler Gregory Okonma plays his best friend, Gwyneth Paltrow plays his love interest, Shark Tank’s Mr. Wonderful Kevin O’Leary as a famous millionaire and so many more make up this cast. I was impressed with Chalamet especially after finding out he trained for years in ping pong in order to do all the playing himself. I’ll start by saying in true A24 style, this is not your run-of-the-mill biopic. It’s edgy and at times off-putting and you almost despise the main character. But trust me when I say this is a fun watch. Josh Safdie, who also directed Uncut Gems, knows how to make you stressed for the leading man for two hours. Good watch if you’re okay with a movie that takes you on a ride!
