May December

The phrase “may december” is usually referring to a relationship with a younger woman and an older man. Well what if it were the opposite, a younger man has a relationship with an older woman.  Loosely inspired by Mary Kay Letourneau and her story, Gracie (Julianne Moore), the older woman, and her husband Joe (Charles Melton) got together when she was 36 and he was 12. She went to jail for the relationship but they ended up getting married and staying in their hometown. Eighteen years after the fact, Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) is a famous actress who is about to star as Gracie in a film. She comes to visit to get a feel of the relationship before filming starts. This is a weird movie, the conversations are awkward and the whole premise is so outlandish, but I think that’s the point. Following along with Portman as she gets the whole scope of the relationship and the impact it had on the community is interesting. Julianne Moore does a good job playing this naive and slightly creepy woman (with a terrible lisp). Haven’t seen Melton in anything since Riverdale so good for him for stepping into the big leagues. Overall, this wasn’t my absolute favorite but I’m glad I sat down to watch it.
