Monk is an author who has had enough of entertainment profiting off of the Black narrative that’s filled with stereotypes. How does he exact his revenge? By using a pen name and writing a crazy novel including every stereotype and offensive cliche that he’s tired of seeing. And to his surprise, it becomes a bestseller! Amid his family drama, he takes a deep dive into what exactly is the problem, the system or him. Jeffery Wright (Westworld) plays Monk and is fantastic. Randall from This Is Us (Sterling K. Brown) plays his brother, Clifford, who is a bit all over the place and discovering who he is. This movie was hilarious, it’s a dark comedy that will have you uncomfortably laughing but laughing nonetheless. It’s a slower movie than you’d expect but it was still a good watch.
