The Color Purple

Trigger warning: movie depicts domestic violence

Based on the musical that was based on the book by Alice Walker, Oprah and Steven Spielberg produced this stunning film. Celie is separated from her sister, Nettie, at a young age, put into an awful marriage, and has to learn how to survive. Through the years she meets people that help her learn that she has a voice and just how to use it. I won’t deny that this isn’t a happy movie, there are fun parts but it’s very heavy. Fantasia Barrino, who portrayed Celie on Broadway, is heartbreakingly talented. Other big names staring in this are Taraji P. Henson, Coleman Domingo (Rustin), Danielle Brooks (Orange Is The New Black), Halle Bailey (Little Mermaid), H.E.R., and Ciara. If you’re a fan of musicals this would be a good one to sit down and watch. The runtime is almost two and a half hours so maybe take a break also.
