There have been a few movies about failing relationships; Marriage Story, Kramer vs Kramer, Blue Valentine, and Crazy, Stupid, Love. The premise is all the same, two hours of watching what could go wrong over time between two people who once cared about each other. Well enter the Roses, Benedict Cumberbatch/Theo is a successful architect who falls in love with Olivia Coleman/Ivy, an up-and-coming chef. Adapted from the book The War of the Roses, you follow them through the years as the once small cracks cause giant rifts down the road. What makes this move different you may ask? It’s hysterical. Sure there are solemn moments but you’re brought back to laughter quickly. You might be uncomfortable at times but it’s so awkwardly funny I would recommend it to anyone married or not. Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon do a lot of improv, which should explain the awkwardness for anyone familiar with their previous roles. Keep in mind it’s a lot of British humor that’s very crass and fast paced but overall this was a great original film.
