The Smashing Machine

Mark Kerr was one of the best MMA fighters to go on to win the UFC championship. Based on his life and the documentary of the same name, watch as he strives for victory amidst addiction and tumultuous relationships. This started getting buzz because Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was cast as Kerr and Emily Blunt as his girlfriend Dawn. It got a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, and so I needed to see it. I’ll preface with, if you don’t like violence, then don’t see this movie. You don’t just see blood, you hear the crunch of each punch. It was written and directed by Benny Safdie (who most notably wrote and directed Uncut Gems), and I thought this was good. Johnson and Blunt are the stars of the show, both very convincing, portraying a toxic relationship. I think watching any athlete compete at a high level gives a greater appreciation for the sport. Not sure I would see it again, but if you’d like to see compelling acting, I would catch this one!
