Frankenstein

He’s alive!! Guillermo del Toro’s latest project was an interesting one, taking science fiction to new heights. Oscar Isaac (Dune, Star Wars) plays Doctor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, The Kissing Booth) plays the Frankenstein monster, and Mia Goth (Pearl, X) plays Lady Elizabeth Harlander. If you’re not familiar with the tale, the good doctor takes life into his own hands by creating a man from parts of corpses to prove that life can be created. However, playing God can’t last long when he has an unpredictable force against him. What I liked about this movie is that it’s told in parts, first from Doctor Frankenstein’s point of view and then from the Monster’s, giving perspective to the narrative. Del Toro has been wanting to make this movie since the early 2000s, and you can tell he put his whole heart and soul into this project. It’s beautiful visually and tragic conceptually. I was never required to read the book by Mary Shelley in high school, but going in blind, I enjoyed it. Warning, it’s not for the squeamish. I don’t think I’ll be watching it again, but I recommend seeing it once. It’s pretty dark, literally and figuratively, but a good watch for a night in!
