Trigger warning: discussions of domestic violence, sexual, verbal and emotional abuse, court evidence portrays alcohol and substance abuse
Number of episodes: 3
Whether you wanted to or not you know about the defamation case involving Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Whether you watched the trial on YouTube, saw memes later, or had an emotional attachment to the verdict, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Well the documentary we all knew was coming has finally come out on Netflix. I’ll say, they did it well. They have both the trial footage, clips from people there, and commentary from outside sources. They put both testimonies side-by-side so you can listen to the full narrative and timeline. Since the original trial was six weeks long I appreciate the edits because it was hard to keep it all straight. The series also focuses on the social impact that the trial and aftermath had, complete with internet commentators mocking and giving input. This was an emotional trial, but how each side handles the cross examining is the entertaining part. I won’t disclose whether I’m a supporter of either of the actors but I will state that neither of them are perfect and this was an unfortunate end to a toxic relationship. If you’re a true crime/court junkie, I think you’ll think this is interesting.
