Trigger warning: scenes depicting the Holocaust and slavery may be too intense for some viewers

Isabel Wilkerson in 2022 was stuck on what to write next. She had a successful novel but wasn’t sure where to go from there. Then the Treyvon Martin shooting happened and that sparked conversations around her, what if there’s more to the genetic makeup of racism, and could historical events be more connected than we think? This leads her to write her internationally bestselling book Caste. Ava DuVernay directs this remarkable movie about Wilkerson’s journey to research and write this book while dealing with unimaginable personal tragedy. It was really well done and heartbreaking at the same time. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Ray, True Bloods, When They See Us, King Richard) plays Wilkerson and Jon Bernthal (The Punisher, Ford v. Ferrari) plays her husband Brett. Great choice if you want a drama but be warned that it’s really heavy.
