Can you only have one “love of your life”? Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) gets to face that question in real time when she reaches Pergatory and she must choose between her husband of 65 years (Miles Teller) and her husband who died in the war (Callum Turner), who waited for her all this time, to spend eternity with. John Early and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who play the afterlife coordinators, do what they can to help their husband win over Joan. This movie fell completely under the radar; it wasn’t in theaters long enough for me to catch it, and barely got any publicity, but it should have! It was completely original, funny, and smart in how it tackled an impossible scenario. Not only were Teller and Turner charming, but they embodied their characters so well. Teller credits his late grandfather as his inspiration for the mannerisms of his internally 80-year old character. It reminded me of When Harry Met Sally in the sense that it’s not a typical rom-com and not overly cheesy. Great choice for a night in!
