Trigger warning: movie depicts rape victims and discussions of rape
Based on the book of the same name by Miriam Toews, the women of a Mennonite colony discuss whether or not to leave the men who have attacked them. I’m not going to sugarcoat it, this movie is rough. It’s intense and raw and hard to comprehend. Inspired by a true story, men in the colony used cow tranquilizer to sedate the women and assault them while they sleep, age never mattered. The movie flows like a play, similar to 12 Angry Men, with heated and poignant arguments for which decision is the “right” one. The cast is phenomenal with Claire Foy, Rooney Mara, Francis McDormand and Jessie Buckley. You can’t help but be transfixed at their testimonies and verbal processing. Luckily there isn’t any scenes showing the assaults but the aftermath is equally as heart wrenching. I’m putting this in my category of “it’s hard to watch but it’s important to watch.”
