Grad student Olive Smith doesn’t have any family, only her best friend Anh. So when Anh wants to put her love life on hold out of consideration for Olive, she comes up with the only alternative: pretend to be dating. However, when she’s about to be caught in the lie, Olive kisses the nearest person, the villainous academic advisor, Dr. Carlsen. Now they have to keep up the ruse in order for him to get more grant money and for Olive to trick Anh. Based on the book of the same name by Ali Hazelwood, Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) plays Olive, and Tom Bateman (Based on a True Story) plays Adam/evil advisor. I thought this was adorable, and before the book die-hards start to debate, I’ve been told that it’s pretty close to the book plot-wise. The physical comedy alone will make you laugh and then feel secondhand embarrassment. All in all it’s a pretty decent rom-com for straight-to-streaming. Definitely a good pick for a night in or girls’ night!
